Measure your ring size at home

How do I measure my ring size at home?

The easiest way is to use a free phone-based ring size calculator such as RingSize. Calibrate your screen with a bank card, then match an on-screen circle to a ring that fits, or match an on-screen line to a paper strip wrapped around your finger. Offline, you can wrap a thin paper strip around your finger, mark the overlap, measure its length in millimetres and compare it with a ring size chart. Measure when your hands are warm and repeat on a second day. Our guide on how to measure ring size at home shows every method step by step.

Can I measure my ring size with my phone?

Yes. Your phone screen can work as a ruler once it is calibrated. In RingSize you stand a bank card upright on the screen and drag a slider until the card edges touch the guide lines. This tells the tool how many pixels equal one millimetre on your phone. Then you measure a ring or a paper strip. Keep the page at its normal zoom level and do not pinch the screen while you measure.

How do I find my ring size without a ring sizer?

Use a strip of thin paper, unwaxed dental floss or a string that does not stretch. Wrap it snugly around the base of the finger, mark where the end overlaps, unwrap it and measure the length in millimetres. That length is your finger's circumference. Divide it by 3.1416 to get the diameter, or look the circumference up in a ring size chart. You can also measure the inside diameter of a ring that already fits.

How do I use an online ring size calculator?

Open the calculator on your phone and keep the page at normal zoom. Calibrate the screen by matching a bank card to the guide lines. Choose whether to measure a ring you own or a paper strip. Adjust the slider until the on-screen circle or line matches your ring or your mark. Read your size, and switch between US, UK, EU, India and Japan sizes if you need a different system.

How accurate is an online ring size calculator?

It can give a reliable estimate if you calibrate with a real card, keep the page at its normal zoom and look straight down at the ring. Accuracy is limited by how carefully you calibrate, your viewing angle and the fact that fingers change size during the day. Treat the result as a good starting point and, for an expensive or hard-to-resize ring, have a jeweler confirm the size.

Ring size charts and measurements

How do I use a ring size chart?

Measure the inside diameter or circumference of a ring, or your finger, in millimetres. Find the closest value in the chart, then read across the row to the size system your shop uses. If you fall between two rows, choose the larger size, and add a quarter to half a size for wide bands. See the full ring size chart with US, UK, EU, India and Japan sizes.

How can I measure a ring's inner diameter?

Lay the ring flat and measure across the inside of the band, from inner edge to inner edge through the centre, in millimetres. Do not include the metal. A digital caliper is best, and a ruler works if you read it carefully. You can also place the ring on the on-screen circle in RingSize. Measure twice, turning the ring a little between readings. A diameter of 17.3 mm is about a US size 7.

What are the different ring size measurements?

Ring size can be given as the inner diameter in millimetres, the inner circumference in millimetres, or a size number or letter. The US and Canada use numbers such as 7, the UK and Australia use letters such as N½, EU sizes follow ISO 8653 and roughly equal the inner circumference in millimetres, Indian sizes are about the circumference minus 40, and Japan uses its own numbers. Band width is a separate measurement that affects how tight a ring feels.

Where can I find a men's ring size chart?

Ring sizes use the same scale for men and women, so any good ring size chart works. Our ring size chart lists US sizes 3 to 13 with UK, EU, India and Japan conversions. Look in the US 8 to 12 range for typical men's sizes. Men's rings are often wider, so consider going up a quarter to half a size.

What is the US ring size chart?

The US ring size chart matches US sizes, usually in half steps, to the inner diameter and circumference of the ring. For example, US 6 is 16.51 mm across (51.9 mm around), US 7 is 17.32 mm (54.4 mm) and US 8 is 18.13 mm (57.0 mm). Each full size adds about 0.81 mm to the diameter, following diameter = 11.63 + 0.8128 x size. Find every size in our ring size chart.

Average ring sizes and size comparisons

What is the average ring size for women?

A commonly cited average for women is about US 6 to 7, which is an inner diameter of roughly 16.5 to 17.3 mm. Averages differ between countries and surveys, and finger sizes vary widely, so measure your own finger instead of relying on an average.

What is the average ring size for men?

A commonly cited average for men is about US 9 to 10, which is an inner diameter of roughly 18.9 to 19.8 mm, although some sources give slightly different figures. Many men's rings fall between US 8 and 12. Measure your own finger to find the right size.

Is ring size 6 or 7 bigger?

Size 7 is bigger than size 6. A US size 7 has an inner diameter of about 17.32 mm and a circumference of 54.4 mm, while a size 6 is about 16.51 mm and 51.9 mm. The difference is roughly 0.8 mm in diameter, or 2.5 mm in circumference.

Is size 7 a big ring size for a woman?

No. US 7 sits within the typical range for women, where averages are often quoted as US 6 to 7. Whether it feels big depends on your finger, your knuckle and the width of the band. The best check is your own measurement, so see our ring size guide to find your size.

Indian ring sizes

What is ring size 7 in India?

A US size 7 has an inner diameter of about 17.3 mm and a circumference of about 54.4 mm, which is roughly Indian ring size 14. In other systems it is UK N½, EU 54 and Japan 14. Indian sizing can differ slightly between jewelers, so confirm the shop's own chart before you buy.

How do I convert US ring sizes to Indian ring sizes?

Convert the US size to the inner diameter with 11.63 + 0.8128 x size. Multiply by 3.1416 to get the circumference in millimetres, then subtract 40 for the approximate Indian size. For example, US 6 is 16.51 mm across and 51.9 mm around, which is Indian 12. US 7 is 54.4 mm around, which is Indian 14, and US 8 is 57.0 mm around, which is Indian 17. Fit, accuracy and ring size adjusters

What is a ring size adjuster and how does it work?

A ring size adjuster is a small insert or guard, such as a spring coil, silicone sleeve or adhesive strip, that narrows the inside of a loose ring so it sits more snugly and stops spinning. It usually changes the fit by about one size and can be removed. For a permanent fix, a jeweler can resize the ring. Read our ring size adjuster guide for the types and when to resize instead.

How can I check if my ring size is correct?

A correct fit slides over the knuckle with slight resistance, sits snugly at the base without leaving a deep mark, turns with a little effort and does not slip off when you move your hand. Check at different times of day, compare against a ring that already fits using the inner diameter, and measure again with the RingSize calculator. For valuable rings, ask a jeweler to confirm the size.
