Diameter is the inside width of the ring. Circumference is the inside distance around it. Sizes between the rows can be read by interpolating, and quarter sizes exist in the US system.
How to Read the Ring Size Chart
- Measure your finger or an existing ring in millimetres. You can use the steps in our guide to measuring ring size at home.
- Find the closest diameter or circumference in the chart.
- Read across the row to see your size in the system that the shop uses.
- If you fall between two rows, choose the larger size, especially for wide bands.
Ring Size Measurements: Diameter and Circumference
All ring size systems describe the same thing: the size of the hole in the ring. For US sizes, the inner diameter in millimetres is about 11.63 plus 0.8128 times the size. A US size 7 therefore has a diameter of about 17.32 mm, and every full size adds about 0.81 mm. Circumference is the diameter multiplied by pi, so a size 7 has an inner circumference of about 54.4 mm.
The US Ring Size Chart Explained
US and Canadian sizes use numbers, usually in half-size steps, though quarter sizes exist. Common adult sizes run from about 5 to 11. Many women's rings fall between 5 and 8, and many men's between 8 and 12, but individual sizes vary widely. If you wear a US size 7 ring and want to know the UK size, read across the row: it is N½.
UK, Australian and Other Systems
- UK and Australia use letters, with half sizes marked ½, for example L½ or N½.
- EU (ISO 8653) sizes are based on the inner circumference in millimetres, so a size of 54 means about 54 mm around. Some European countries use numbers that are 40 smaller, such as Italy.
- India uses numbers that run about 40 below the circumference in millimetres, so a circumference of about 54.4 mm is an Indian size 14.
- Japan uses a numeric scale of its own. Some conversion charts list values only for certain sizes, so a size marked with a tilde is an approximation.
Worked Example: Converting One Measurement to Every System
Suppose you measure the inside of your ring and get a diameter of 17.3 mm. That is a circumference of about 54.4 mm. In the chart this lines up with a US size 7, which is UK N½, EU 54, India 14 and Japan 14. The same measurement gives the right size in every country, which is why measuring in millimetres first is the safest way to shop internationally.
Half Sizes and Quarter Sizes
US rings are sold in whole and half sizes, and some brands offer quarter sizes. One half size is only about 0.4 mm of diameter, which is small but noticeable on the finger. If your measurement falls halfway between two half sizes, choose the larger one. If you buy a wide band, you may want to move up another quarter or half size, because wide bands grip more of the finger.
Why Ring Size Charts Differ Slightly
You may notice small differences between charts. Manufacturers round measurements differently, some charts list the ring's interior and others the finger, and a few brands use their own sizing. For an important purchase, check the retailer's own conversion table and, when possible, compare with a ring that fits you. The chart here is a guide, not a guarantee.
Tips for Choosing the Right Size
- Choose the larger size when you are between two sizes.
- Add a quarter to half a size for bands wider than about 6 to 8 mm.
- Measure on more than one day, when your hands are warm.
- Read our ring size guide if you are still working out what is my ring size.
Use the Chart With Your Own Measurement
A chart is most useful when you bring a real measurement to it. If you have not measured yet, the free ring size calculator gives you a diameter, a circumference and the size in all five systems in about two minutes. If you want to work offline, follow the paper strip and ruler methods and then return to the table.
FAQ: Ring Size Chart
What is the most common ring size?
It depends on who you ask, but many adults fall between US 5 and 11. Many women's rings fall between 5 and 8 and many men's between 8 and 12.
How do I convert US ring size to UK?
Find your US size in the first column and read across to the UK column. US 7 is UK N½, and US 8 is UK P½.
Is a UK size the same as a US size?
No. The UK uses letters and the US uses numbers, and the two scales are offset. For example, a US size 7 is a UK N½.
Is ring size the diameter or circumference?
Both describe the same size. The US system is tied to the inner diameter, while EU and many other systems relate to the inner circumference.
